A day in the life of Abigael

Hello, my name is Abigael, I’m 5 years old and live in the Umoja Children‘s Home. Today, I will take you through my day so you can see what our life is like!

I wake up at 6am and do my morning routine: like washing my face and putting myself into school uniform. We‘re having breakfast at 7:00am which is tea and sometimes chapati or banana. At 7:50am we‘re doing a little prayer before starting our classes at 08:00. The first lesson goes from 08:00 to 09:15am — we‘re learning how to count, write the letters of the alphabet and name colors. From 09:15 to 09:30, we have a short break to relax and then the next two lessons go from there to 10:45am. We also paint & use dough a lot which is real fun!

Next up is a long tea break from 10:45 to 11:00. After this we’re going to a lawn that we just call “the field” to play things like football, skipping rope, sandbox… For 12:30 we have washing and changing clothes scheduled to be ready for lunch which is from 01:00pm to 2:00pm. Most of the time, we eat Ugali with pumpkin, beans and cabbage.

After lunch we have free time where we can play a lot! Back to the field!

Children brushing their teeth before bed

At 6:30pm we study and read together with the older kids in the dining room. Before dinner at 7:30pm we pray. Last thing of the day is brushing teeth and then we go to sleep. Good night! 🌙
